Welcome!  Over 70 deacons provide countless "tasks of practical charity" in the parish communities of the Diocese of Syracuse. Our deacons' outreach encompass ministries in health care, for the elderly, schools, community programs for those in need and prisons.  They are preaching the Gospel news in word and deed.

The restoration of the Office of Permanent Deacon following Vatican II in the mid-1960's recalls the ancient tradition described in The Acts of Apostles, Chapter 6, when the disciples of the early church presented seven  "reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom [..] to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them."  These seven, the first Deacons, were ordained by the apostles and charged with tasks of practical charity in the community of believers.

Today the Permanent Diaconate is vital and growing! We invite you to visit these pages and:

Our New Website

The new website for Permanent Deacons in the Diocese of Syracuse is an up-to-date extension of the original site created over two years ago.

The original goal:  to create an open, collaborative space for our deacons to use in their ministries. And that goal is still very much alive in this new site.

Today:  the growth in cloud computing is enabling us to leverage the power of the Internet wherever we are ministering to God's people. Join us in learning about the Ministry of the Permanent Diaconate.
